BTS announced they are not submitting their music for consideration at this year’s Grammy Awards. All seven members posted the same message, translated from Korean:
“We’ve decided not to submit our work for this year’s Grammy Awards. We hope music will be recognized and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. Thank you, as always, to ARMY and everyone who supports us.”
Let’s be clear about the timing. This comes about a month after the Recording Academy rolled out a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, a category built for exactly the kind of act BTS is. And instead of taking the seat they were handed, they walked away from the table.
That is not an accident. That is a statement.

The Grammys have never known what to do with artists who don’t fit their idea of who gets to be “mainstream.” So they build a side category. A holding pen labeled by region and language, so the real categories stay untouched. It’s not an honor. It’s a workaround. And BTS, one of the biggest acts on the planet, just called it what it is.
I believe this is the first time BTS has publicly named the racism and discrimination baked into western music institutions, not danced around it. And that matters. This is not the same BTS that used to stay careful, stay quiet, stay palatable for an industry that was never going to fully embrace them anyway. This is a group that has grown into knowing their own worth, and refusing to accept a smaller room when they already built the whole house.
They don’t need the Grammys to be successful. They proved that a long time ago. Chart records, sold out stadiums, a global fandom that doesn’t need a trophy to validate it. The Grammys needed BTS a lot more than BTS needed the Grammys, and this is what happens when an artist finally acts like they know it.
Music is not supposed to be sorted by where you’re from or what language you sing in. Music is a universal language, full stop. The second an institution starts dividing artists into boxes based on region, it stops being about the music and starts being about control.
So gladly, Grammys: fuck you.
