What The Hell Will I Wear To A Wedding

Dear Readers,

I have a wedding to attend next week. As a guest. And my gosh, it has been so long since I’ve been to one.

The last wedding I attended, I was maid of honor for a former five minute college friend. I was 18. Honestly, I barely remember it. It’s a blur. All I can recall is wearing a cheap basic blue dress from David’s Bridal, being the only Black person at an all white wedding, and watching the bride and groom slow dance to Brian McKnight’s “Back At One.” When she tossed the bouquet, I dodged it as fast as I could.

Funny enough, I had a long term boyfriend there watching me dodge a bouquet like my life depended on it. He did not take that as a red flag. I clearly didn’t want marriage, at least not then, and he missed it completely.

My friend and her groom moved to Kansas. They were divorced within six months. His infidelity, obviously. I saw it coming from a mile away. The man had a long term female “friend” who turned out to be his secret friends-with-benefits and his best man. Read the room, ladies.

Okay. Back to the present.

My uncle is getting married, so for the past week I’ve been combing every fashion site I can find. I started with Fashion Nova’s wedding guest section. Uncomfortable and boring, both. I’m not interested in anything form fitting right now. I’m in the middle of transforming my body into what I want it to be, and I’m not dressing for where I was, I’m dressing for where I’m headed.

So I bought two bohemian reversible goddess dresses with dramatic Renaissance sleeves. Reversible means I actually get four looks out of two dresses. Smart shopping, not just cute shopping.

Now I just need shoes. Low heel or flats, still deciding.

I’ll update you on how the wedding actually goes.

Ciao.
