So you posted something online.
Maybe it was an opinion. Maybe it was a joke. Maybe you said women should stop centering men and suddenly a man you have never met appeared in your comments with a five-paragraph dissertation explaining why your post is stupid.
Congratulations.
You have officially summoned an internet troll.
And before you start typing a 700-word response defending yourself, I need you to understand something:
That person is helping you.
Yes. Helping.
So honestly?
Thank them.
Hate Comments Are Still Comments
One of the funniest things about internet trolls is that they genuinely believe leaving an angry comment is somehow punishing you.
Baby.
You commented.
You interacted with the post.
You gave me engagement.
And if you come back to argue with everybody replying to you? Even better.
Because social media platforms pay attention to interaction. Comments, replies, shares, saves, watch time, and other engagement signals can help platforms determine whether people are interested in a piece of content.
Notice I said interested.
The algorithm does not need everybody in the comment section holding hands and singing Kumbaya.
Sometimes controversy gets people TALKING.
And the troll who wrote:
“This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.”
…still read it.
Then commented.
Then came back when somebody replied.
Then responded again.
Sir, at this point, are you a hater or a member of my marketing department?
Because you’re putting in HOURS.
You Don’t Have to Convince Everybody
This is where creators get themselves exhausted.
Someone disagrees with you, and suddenly you feel like you need to explain yourself.
Then clarify.
Then clarify the clarification.
Then provide sources.
Then explain what you actually meant.
Then respond to their response to your response.
Meanwhile, the person you’re arguing with was never interested in understanding you in the first place.
Stop auditioning for the approval of people committed to misunderstanding you.
Your content isn’t a courtroom.
You don’t have to defend every opinion like you’re standing before the Supreme Court of Instagram.
Sometimes the appropriate response is:
“Thanks for the engagement 💕.”
And go make yourself a snack.
Some People Are Triggered Because the Content Hit Somewhere
This is especially funny when someone insists your post doesn’t describe them.
You’ll post:
“Women should stop managing grown men’s lives.”
And here comes somebody:
“NOT ALL MEN DO THIS AND WOMEN DO THINGS TOO AND ACTUALLY—”
Okay.
Then why are you yelling?
If I see a post describing behavior that has absolutely nothing to do with me, I usually keep scrolling.
I don’t need to write a manifesto proving that I’m not the person being described.
Sometimes the intensity of someone’s reaction tells you more than the actual comment.
If the shoe doesn’t fit, why are you trying so hard to squeeze your foot into it?
Don’t Feed Every Troll
Now, thanking trolls for engagement doesn’t mean you need to entertain everybody.
There are levels to this.
Someone respectfully disagreeing with you? Cool. Have a conversation if you want.
Someone being sarcastic? Maybe I’ll be sarcastic back. Depends on my mood.
Someone writing an angry essay underneath my post?
Oh, I’m probably laughing.
But someone threatening you, harassing you, repeatedly targeting you, using slurs, posting personal information, or crossing serious boundaries?
Block. Report. Delete.
Engagement is cute.
Your peace is cuter.
You don’t owe somebody continued access to you just because technically they’re helping your numbers.
Stop Letting Strangers Ruin Your Day
This is probably the biggest lesson.
You could receive 100 positive comments and somehow your brain will zoom directly toward:
“This post sucks.”
Excuse me?
Ninety-nine people are vibing and we’re about to spend our entire afternoon emotionally investigating Brad42069?
Absolutely not.
Not everybody is going to like you.
Not everybody is going to understand your humor.
Not everybody is going to agree with your opinions.
And if you’re creating content that actually says something instead of posting watered-down opinions designed to offend absolutely nobody, disagreement is inevitable.
I’d rather someone say:
“Girl, WHAT?”
than scroll past because I said absolutely nothing worth reacting to.
Sometimes I Respond Because It’s Funny
I’m not going to sit here and pretend I’m spiritually evolved enough to ignore every troll.
Please.
Sometimes the response is sitting RIGHT THERE.
And I have thumbs.
There’s a difference between having fun with your comment section and allowing a stranger to drag you into an exhausting argument.
I’ll give you a little sass.
I’ll make a joke.
I’ll turn your comment into another post.
Hell, you might inspire an entire blog article.
But I’m not spending three hours trying to convince a random person on the internet that I’m worthy of having an opinion.
Especially when I could be creating more content.
Turn the Hate Into Content
This is where you become strategic.
Did somebody leave a ridiculous comment?
Screenshot it.
Make a response video.
Turn it into a carousel.
Write a Threads post.
Make a meme.
Write a blog post.
Ask your audience what they think.
One hater can accidentally give you five new pieces of content.
Now THAT is recycling.
And the funniest part?
They’ll probably come back to comment on the new post too.
At that point, I need to put you on payroll.
My Favorite Response? Thank You.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about somebody trying to upset you and realizing you’re not upset.
They’re typing furiously.
You’re looking at your engagement.
They’re writing another paragraph.
You’re brainstorming your next post.
They’re telling you they’ll never follow you.
Okay?
Thank you for stopping by anyway. 💕
The internet becomes much easier when you stop believing every stranger deserves an emotional reaction from you.
Some comments deserve thoughtful responses.
Some deserve boundaries.
Some deserve the block button.
And some deserve nothing more than:
“Thanks for boosting my engagement, babe. 💕”
Because imagine spending your evening hate-commenting underneath somebody’s content only to realize…
you’ve been doing free promo the entire time.
Embarrassing.
Anyway.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and share. 😘
