Being On Your Period In Your 30s

Having a menstrual cycle in your 30s is a completely different experience compared to your teens and 20s. And nobody talks about it enough.

What My 20s Looked Like

My period in my 20s was predictable. Manageable. I barely needed meds.

I did not get cramps. Then again, I was on birth control for the first half of that decade. I remember being moody and tired, but it was tolerable.

The second half of my 20s, I came off the pill. My period was still easy to manage. Smooth sailing, all the way up to 30.

Then My 30s Hit

Now my period symptoms are worse. Unpredictable. It is Russian roulette every single month. I never know what I am about to get.

Here is my current lineup:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Tension headaches
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Light nausea
  • Huge appetite one day, none the next
  • Body aches
  • Tiredness
  • Restlessness
  • Hot flashes
  • Cold flashes

What is really messed up is I never know which symptom shows up first. It is a new surprise every cycle.

I Tried Going Back On The Pill

After a few brutal months, I decided to try birth control again. My period still outbeat it.

It did not calm my symptoms down. It made them worse. I tried three different pills, low dose to high dose, and eventually had to stop all of them. I made peace with handling it naturally instead.

Why This Is Happening

According to the Woman Wellness Clinic, your period changes in your 30s. Average cycle length shifts. Bleeding can get heavier or lighter. PMS gets more intense thanks to hormonal changes.

That explains exactly why my body feels like a stranger every month now.
